Plastic litter bins become a very expensive fire hazard.
Cllr Michael Wyatt has contacted the council, asking them to look at alternative litter bins, after an increase in the amount of bins being deliberately set on fire over the past two weeks.
Recently there has been at least one plastic litter bin set on fire every week, your Lib Dem Councillors have already recorded over thirty bins over the past two years that have been hit by arsonist. The cost of each bin is roughly £85, including time to install it, 30 bins being replaced has already costed the taxpayer approx £2550 extra in the Greenhill Ward alone.
Cllr Michael Wyatt said “The Council needs to address the issue of using plastic litter bins. The cost and the danger of the bins being set on fire is escalating out of control. This extra cost of £2250 could of been spent on better things to improve the area in which we live. Not only is the cost effectiveness of the bins needs to be looked into, but also the danger they pose when they are set on fire, due to many being installed in bus shelters, and near to people’s homes”.
